What Is an Oxygen Absorber?

Oxygen absorbers are small packets containing iron powder and natural minerals that remove oxygen from sealed packages.
They are widely used in the food industry to extend shelf life and preserve freshness in products like jerky, dried fruits, nuts, and snacks.

Main Functions

Inhibit microbial growth by creating an oxygen-free environment.

Prevent oxidation, discoloration, and flavor changes — keeping food’s original taste and nutrition.

Even after vacuum sealing or nitrogen flushing, trace oxygen may remain. Oxygen absorbers can reduce it to below 0.1%, ensuring maximum freshness and safety.

How to Choose the Right Type of Oxygen Absorber?

Choosing the right absorber depends on the air volume inside your packaging.

Quick Calculation Formula

Absorber Type = 0.2 × Air Volume in the Package (ml)

Example:
If the air volume inside the package is 1000 ml, choose an Oxygen Absorber Type 200.

※Tip: Don’t forget to consider the air content of the food itself, as some foods naturally contain air that also needs to be absorbed.

Annex 1: Testing Method for Oxygen Absorption Property of Iron-based Series oxygen absorber

1. Principle

Under normal atmospheric pressure and constant temperature, the oxygen absorber sample is placed inside a liquid-sealed container.
As the sample absorbs oxygen, a pressure difference is generated, causing the liquid level inside the measuring system to rise.
The volume of liquid rise corresponds directly to the oxygen absorption capacity of the sample.

2. Testing steps

Setup:
Secure the oxygen absorber sample on a bracket.
The test apparatus consists of a beaker, measuring cylinder, bracket, ear washer, and rubber tube, as shown in the figure below.

Calibration:
Adjust the water level in the measuring cylinder to the desired reading scale using the ear washer.
The total oxygen volume in the measuring cylinder should be six times the absorber type being tested.
For example, for a Type 30 sample, the required oxygen volume is 180 ml, which corresponds to 900 ml of air.

Testing:
Disconnect the rubber tube and record the initial liquid level.
Maintain the system at a constant temperature of 25°C and normal pressure.
Observe and record the liquid level every 24 hours until no further rise is detected for a continuous 24-hour period.
The total change in liquid level represents the oxygen absorption capacity of the sample.

For Larger Samples:
When testing large-capacity (high-cc) samples, the oxygen requirement increases.
In this case, replace the air 2–3 times during the test.
Repeat the above operation steps for each air replacement, and record the liquid level change each time.
The sum of all liquid level differences gives the total oxygen absorption capacity of the sample.

Annex 2: Testing Procedure

1. Sample Preparation

Place one sachet of the test sample into a KNY plastic bag.
Remove the air from the bag, then fill it with CO₂ gas equivalent to four times the rated type (cc) of the test sample.
Seal the bag immediately after filling.

For control comparison, prepare another bag using inert samples (without oxygen or CO₂ absorption ability).
Fill and seal it in the same way to record the initial gas volume, which is measured using the drainage method.

2. Measurement

Place the sealed KNY bags in a constant-temperature incubator at 25°C.
Measure the package volume every 24 hours until no further change is observed.
The difference in package volume represents the total CO₂ absorbed by the sample.

3. For Larger Samples

When testing larger-capacity (high-cc) samples, the amount of CO₂ required increases.
In this case, fill the CO₂ gas 2–3 times during the test.
After each refilling, record the volume change before and after filling.
The sum of all volume changes represents the total CO₂ absorption capacity of the sample.

Annex 3:Testing Method for Oxygen Absorption and CO₂ Release Property of Yome-O

1. Equipment

O₂/CO₂ Concentration Tester

2. Testing Procedure

Sample Preparation:
Place the test sample together with 1.5 g of absorbent paper (which contains 0.5 g of water absorbed by 1 g of dry paper) into a KNY plastic bag.
Remove the air inside the bag, then fill it with oxygen gas equivalent to four times the rated capacity (cc) of the test sample, and seal the bag.

Example: For a Type 30 sample, fill 120 mL of oxygen, equivalent to 600 mL of air.

Prepare a control group using samples of the same type but without the ability to absorb oxygen or release CO₂.
Seal and fill these control samples in the same way, and record the initial package volume (V₀) using the drainage method.

Measurement:
Place the sealed test samples in a constant-temperature incubator at 25°C.
After 7 days, measure the package volume (V) again by the drainage method.
Then, measure the O₂ concentration (A) and CO₂ concentration (B) in the bag using the O₂/CO₂ concentration tester.

Use the following formulas to calculate the total oxygen absorption (V(O₂)) and total CO₂ release (V(CO₂)):

3. Calculation Formulas

V(O2)=(V0×21%)−(V×A)…(1)

V(CO2)=V×B…(2)

Where:

V(O₂) — Total oxygen absorption (mL)

V₀ — Initial package volume of KNY bag (mL)

V — Package volume after 7 days (mL)

A — O₂ concentration in bag after 7 days (%)

V(CO₂) — Total CO₂ release (mL)

B — CO₂ concentration in bag after 7 days (%)

4. Notes

For larger-type samples, the total air volume required is higher.
You may divide the air filling into 2–3 batches.

Example: For a Type 200 sample, fill 1500 mL of air each time, with 48–72 hours intervals between fillings.

The total reaction time must not be less than 7 days.

Repeat the above steps for each filling, recording the oxygen absorption and carbon dioxide release each time.
The final results are obtained by summing all recorded values.

Annex 4: Testing Method for Color Change Time of Yome-I

1. Testing Conditions

Temperature: Constant at 25°C

2. Testing Procedure

Sample Preparation:
Place one test sample of Yome-I into a KNY plastic bag.
Remove all air inside the bag, then fill it with oxygen gas equivalent to five times the rated capacity (cc) of the test sample, and seal the bag.

Example: For a Type 30 cc sample, fill 150 mL of air.

Observation:

Keep the sealed bag under the constant temperature of 25°C, and continuously observe the color change of the sample.
Record the time required for the color to turn pink — this duration represents the color-changing reaction time of the Yome-I oxygen absorber.

3. Notes

Ensure the bag is properly sealed to prevent external air leakage.

Record both the start time and the time when full pink color appears for accurate measurement.

Perform at least three replicate tests for reliable average data.

Avoid direct sunlight or vibration during testing, as these may affect the color reaction.
